Making Furniture Music

Aidan Baker has two new releases out. The first is Triptychs: Variations On A Melody, released on CD by Important Records, a collection of pieces taking inspiration from Erik Satie’s Gymnopédies and his notion of “furniture music,” which many consider a precursor to contemporary ambient music. Each “triptych” is based around a simple, slow-moving melodic line, which repeats three times with the addition of a harmonic line upon each repetition, culminating in a three part harmony. In addition to Aidan himself, the pieces were performed by a number of different musicians: Leah Buckareff (electric bass, also of Nadja), David Nesselhauf (acoustic bass), Katie English (flute, aka Isnaj Dui), Rose Bolton (violin), Peter Broderick (violin, piano), Angela Chan (viola), Julia Kent (cello), Felicia Atkinson (organ), and Aki Yakamoto (piano, of Vampillia). The CD is available from Important Records or from the Broken Spine Webshop and digitally here:

The second release is At Komma featuring Aidan Baker and Felipe Salazar (also of Caudal) on drums, recorded live last February at Komma in Esslingen, Germany, and released as a limited CD from Tokyo Jupiter Records. This is available directly from the label in Japan, from the Broken Spine Webshop and digitally here:

In performance news, Aidan will be presenting variations of the Triptychs at two upcoming shows:

Friday November 14 at Netwerk in Aalst, Belgium
w/ Séverine Cayron (cello), Jasmijn Lootens (cello), Isabelle Sainte-Rose (cello), and Beatrijs De Klerck (violin).

Saturday November 15 at NK in Berlin, Germany
w/ Christoph Berg (violin) and Simon Goff (violin)

And, lastly, this Friday, November 7 Nadja will be performing in Leipzig at IFZ. More info here.

Post-Incubation

Post-Incubate Festival residency and there are a number of new releases from our friends at Consouling Sounds:

Nadja’s performance at Incubate on Monday September 15 was recorded, mastered, pressed to vinyl, and released on Saturday September 20…somewhat blindly (or ‘deafly,’ so to speak) in that we didn’t get to hear the mix or the master before the looming production deadlines. The LP+CD set, available here is limited to 300 copies and features artwork by Stefan Serneels (whose work you might recognize from our album The Bungled & The Botched).

Also available: Aidan Baker / thisquietarmy Hypnodrone Ensemble recorded live at NK in Berlin on May 2, 2014, featuring the two afore-mentioned guitarists with the three drummers Felipe Salazar, Jeremie Mortier, and David Dunnett. Available on CD here and digitally below:

Lastly, Caudal’s second full-length album Ascension is now available on CD, limited LP, or digital:

Caudal will also be playing a few shows this week, along with thisquietarmy, in support of the new album:

24-09-14: Jaegerklause, Berlin, DE
26-09-14: Glashaus, Bayreuth, DE
27-09-14: Contain’t, Stuttgart, DE
